The grasslands support many different kinds of birds. Many sparrows and other small birds can live off the abundant insects, seeds from grass, and small plants. Many migratory birds, like the great blue heron and canada goose, use the playa lakes as important resting places on their journeys north and south accross North America through the seasons. Click on the riparian life zone to learn more about them.
The plains are especially good for the birds of prey. They can soar in the windy updrafts looking easily over large areas of land for small rodents, rabbits, snakes, lizards, toads, small birds, or carrion (animals that are already dead). They may travel long distances from their nests to do their hunting.
