The Great Plains on the eastern side of Colorado is one of the major landforms in the state. Its elevation is 4000 to 6,000 feet above sea level. It makes up over 40 percent of the land in Colorado. It is labeled as light yellow on the eastern side of the state on the life zone map below. The Purgatoire River, Arkansas River (Southeast CO), and South Platte River (Northeast CO) cut across the plains and provide important riparian habitats for animals and plants. See if you can find them on the bottom most map. Most of the land consists of dry rolling grasslands or short grass prairies with a few playa lakes and ponds.
